Melanesia
Melanesia is one of three major cultural areas in the
Pacific Ocean.
Geographic definition of Melanesia, surrounded by a pink line.
Melanesia is a subregion of Oceania extending from the western end of the Pacific Ocean to the Arafura Sea, and eastward to Fiji. The region comprises most of the islands immediately north and northeast of Australia. The name Melanesia (from Greek: μέλας black; νῆσος,islands) was first used by Jules Dumont d’Urville in 1832 to denote an ethnic and geographical grouping of islands distinct from Polynesiaand Micronesia.

Art of Oceania properly encompasses the artistic traditions of the people indigenous to Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands. The ancestors of the people of these islands came from Southeast Asia by two different byyou groups at separate times. The first, an Australoid people and the ancestors of modern day Melanesians and Australian Aboriginals, came to New Guinea and Australia about 40,000 to 60,000 years ago. The Melanesians expanded as far as the northern Solomon Islands by 38,000 BC. The second wave, fromSoutheast Asia, would not come for another 30,000 years.
(Phil’s Note:Oral History tales by Melanesian Elders that Our People come from Africa to India to Asia then across & settled in Western Pacific ( Melanesia has 35 shades of blackness from Blue Black in the Solomon Islands and Autonomous Bougainville Islands to the Fairest due to Coastal and little island mixing with the traders westerners/easterners etc..Melanesian Highlanders dont mix ! ….as for the Australian Aborigines they must have travelled Africa to India and across to Australia (they are black, broad nose but skinny legs and long straight hair!)…For the Polynesians and Micronesians- Direct Route Asia/Pacific..Slender Asian Eyes!
By 1500 BC the Lapita culture, descendants of the second wave, would begin to expand and spread into the more remote islands. At around the same time, art began to appear in New Guinea, including the earliest examples of sculpture in Oceania. The period from 1000 BC on, By 1500, the first European explorers begin to reach Oceania. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceanic_art
